Non-Toxic Personal Care:
The Skin You’re In, Part Deux

It’s times like this that I realize it’s a good thing I’m writing a blog, and not a book. That way, when I forget things I can just do a new post… Otherwise I’d have to mail you additional book pages, and you’d have learn to re-bind books, and it’d be a drama…
This post is a follow-on to the last. I have a few more tricks that aided me on getting my skin back to itself (which it turns out is pretty darn good!).
Activated Charcoal
When my skin was adjusting, and even before I began the oil cleansing method, I used activated charcoal on blemishes (instead of, not along with, tea tree oil). Both remedies seem very effective, but I happened to have charcoal before I had the tea tree oil. I suspect the charcoal works a bit better on deeper blemishes, or blemishes that have already formed and need to have the pus drawn out. (Sorry, I hope you’re not eating breakfast.)
Back in my product days, I used a charcoal mask (Paula’s very own brand) so I knew how effective charcoal was considered to be. I simply took one of the charcoal capsules from my NaturoKit, broke it open into a tiny bowl, and then used a wet finger to make a bit of paste to apply to the blemish. The downside is that you can’t walk around looking like this; you can only do this at night, and even then you have to explain to your family why you have a Hitler mustache (if, of course, your blemish is under your nose…). I keep this tiny bowl in my medicine cabinet, and I have a feeling that one broken capsule will last me forever.
If you are a mask fan, try this recipe. I have not tried it, so please comment below and let me know if you do.
Charcoal Facial Mask
1 Tbsp. activated charcoal
1 Tbsp. aloe vera gel
1 Tbsp. rose water(I’m pretty lazy, so I may leave this out…)
10-15 drops tea tree oilMix all ingredients together and apply to clean face. (Avoid more sensitive areas, like eyes.) Leave on for 20-30 minutes then rinse with warm water.
Baking Soda Scrub
I don’t do this frequently, but I occasionally use a baking soda scrub. The easy way to do it is to bring a dab of baking soda into the shower, and using your wet fingers or a damp washcloth, gently massage your face in small, circular motions. Rinse well and don’t get it in your eyes. This can also be used to exfoliate your lips or body skin. If you have particularly dry skin, you may want to apply a moisturizer before and after exfoliating.
Other Natural Skincare Ideas
*Even if you’re not doing the oil cleansing method, any of the nourishing oils, such as olive, can be used to remove eye makeup or the new long-wearing lipsticks.
*Both plain yogurt and lemon juice (used independently) are considered to be good treatments for blemishes. Although I have not tried either, both seem to make sense!
Dissenting Opinion
Just in the interest of disclosure, I wanted to let you know that a few weeks after I began the oil cleansing method, my formerly beloved Paula wrote an article indicating that she wasn’t quite a believer. To her, and to you if you’re still not sure, I can only say that my skin cannot lie. I would encourage everyone to give it a shot (a decent amount of time to let your skin adjust) and judge for yourself.

Ooooooooh, boy. I really hope you'll stick with me through this, because I'm going to sound like a loony-toon.
I decided to stop using shampoo. (This was right about the time I also stopped using deodorant, shower gel and toothpaste, AND starting showering less frequently. And my husband still loves me; isn't he the BEST?!)

I wash my mouth out with soap every day. (Twice, actually.)
No, it's not a self-imposed punishment for being a potty-mouth. It's because we've decided one way to improve our dental - and overall - health is to STOP using toothpaste.
We need to be concerned with the safety of our toothpaste ingredients because they enter our...
I always intend to have one day a week on which I write some sort of post about natural health care... And then the week gets away from me and so I rush to get out what people really want: recipes! But in the past few weeks I've had numerous conversations about over-the-counter pain relievers...
To my much-appreciated male readers: This may go into a bit too much detail for you. But please consider passing it on to the women you love: wives, girlfriends, sisters...
I'm actually really excited about this topic. Which seems weird, I know. But I've recently received a few questions on this subject, and I love when...
Yesterday we talked about the dangers of conventional antiperspirants and deodorants, and I shared my reviews of some more natural brands. Today I'm going to tell you how to make your own deodorant. It really is easy, but of course the process of figuring it all out couldn't possibly be...

...that you're free from toxins! That's right, today we're going to discuss non-toxic deodorant options.
Deodorant vs. Antiperspirant
The first major distinction we need to make is between products that control odor (deodorants) and products that control wetness (antiperspirants). You've probably seen the emails from years ago talking about how antiperspirants are a leading cause of breast...
Here we are, in the home stretch. Today we'll cover all that's left in my tiny brain regarding non-toxic hair care.
Remember I mentioned that I'm a hair-idiot? Because of this, I keep it simple and have never really used many products in my hair. In fact, the only product I now own is an all-natural...
Whew! Happy Memorial Day, everyone! Let's see if we can get closer to getting this wrapped up.
So far, we've talked about why we need to pay attention to what we use in our hair and on our scalp, and how to go No 'Poo.
Why I Love No 'Poo
Besides the obvious (knowing that I'm not damaging...
Yesterday we touched on why it's so important to make sure that what we slather on our scalp is not toxic to our bodies. My husband commented that I really didn't stress the danger enough, and that no one was going to click through the links of all the chemical names. So, let me paint...
Yesterday, we focused primarily on replacing our toxic toothpaste.
Today, before we get to the good stuff (discounts and free things), I'd like to focus briefly on dental floss.
I know, I know. What could possibly be bad about any kind of dental floss?!?! But don't hate the messenger! The fact is that manufacturers often use petrochemical...
Although you probably don't think about it much, hand-washing is likely to be the personal-care task you do most each day. It's important to make sure that when you're washing away grime and germs, you're not adding to your body's toxic load.
Handwashing Basics
Before we discuss what to use to wash your hands (and what not...
Before we get into the tedious work of going through personal care products one by one, there are some general rules you can adopt that will reduce the amount of toxins to which you are exposed.
Immediately.
Sound good?
Rule #1. Use less.
That's it! Just use less. Less products, less of the products you continue to use, less often....
I'm very excited to announce that a couple of series that have been on the schedule for a while will be starting early. I've been fielding so many questions about these issues, that I figure it's time to start sharing some research and ideas. I still want to focus on some of the basics of Real Food (and share...
